Beware of Phantom Calories

Appetizer
There is plenty of evidence to suggest that most people consume much more unhealthy food than they realize. These “Phantom Calories” sneak into our diets in unexpected ways often causing us to ingest hundreds or even thousands of extra calories over the course of just a few days.

Main Course
Here are some of the most common Phantom Calorie culprits:

Liquid Calories - Most people make the mistake of thinking that liquids can’t make you gain weight as much as solid foods. In actuality, 200 calories from a glass of juice can make you gain weight just like 200 calories from a cupcake. Calories can even sneak into non-caloric drinks when you alter them to taste better - like when you put sugar and cream in your coffee.

Your Kid’s Plate - People who have children are especially prone to eating more calories than they expect. When you go on a diet you typically make one meal for yourself and something different for your child, but many parents make the mistake of nibbling on their kids’ food or even finishing off what their kids don’t eat. Go ahead and just save their food for later. They will eat it when they are hungry again, and your thighs will thank you for this.

Unplanned Snacks – Sometimes it’s just plain hard to avoid bad foods. Even when you are trying to eat right, there always seems to be people offering you tempting and delicious food at work, social events and maybe even in your own home. It’s hard to say no when things look so good and it’s easy to just go along with the crowd. You have to make a conscious decision to plan your “cheat” meals or snacks and try not to deviate from the plan.

Dessert
It’s strange how unexpected food can creep into our diets. If you think you’ve been eating right, but you haven’t been making any progress in your weight loss, it might actually help you to keep a food journal for a day or two. Just record every little thing that you eat along with the approximate calorie values if you can. You may just be surprised by how much extra food you’re consuming without even thinking about it.

Pretzel Lovers Beware!

Appetizer
Don't take in MORE calories than necessary while doing your Christmas shopping this holiday season.

Unruly children, grumpy salespeople, impossible parking...All of this holiday-time mall chaos can cause many of us to head for the nearest food court in search of a Cheesesteak or Cinnabon - depending on whether you prefer savory or sweet.

As tempting as it may be, try not to use the overcrowded shopping center food court as a refuge during this season's shopping frenzy. You'll regret the added pounds come January 1st...trust me!

Main Course
Follow these food court guidelines from dietwatch.com during your holiday shopping trips, and watch the pounds melt off - or at least not pile on:

Go for low-cal and low-fat options.
Selecting low fat foods can be a challenge, since nutritional information is not readily available. Stick with grilled or steamed foods, and lots of vegetables. Also, poultry sandwiches are lower in calories and fat than their beef or pork counterparts. However, be sure that you're getting grilled chicken, or lean deli meat, and not a breaded, fried chicken breast.

Watch condiments.
Just a teaspoon of mayonnaise contains close to 100 calories and 11 grams of fat. Barbecue sauce, mustard, and ketchup are better options (1 tsp of ketchup: 5.2 cal, 0 g fat; 1 tsp Dijon mustard: 6 calories, 0 g fat; 1 tsp barbecue sauce: 9.9 calories, 0 g fat). However, be aware that even low-fat options are often high in sodium.

Be smart with salads.
Is "I'll just have a salad" your standard answer to eating out? Salads aren't always a calorie bargain, especially if they've been piled with meats and cheeses and topped with oily, creamy dressings—three tablespoons of blue cheese dressing will cost you 232 calories and 24 grams of fat. Order your salad with a low-fat or fat free dressing, or get your dressing on the side. More fast food restaurants are offering salads made from romaine lettuce or spring greens. Choose one of these over a salad made from iceberg lettuce, which offers few vitamins.

Think small.
If nothing will satisfy you but a burger and fries, select the smallest sizes possible—the "kiddie meal" might be just as appropriate for you as it is for your children. If you want a Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookie, have two Nibblers for 110 calories and 5 grams of fat, not a regular cookie with 280 calories and 14 grams of fat. At Cinnabon, choose a Minibon (300 calories, 11 grams of fat) over the regular Cinnabon (730 calories, 24 grams of fat).

Drink water.
Or diet soda, or unsweetened iced tea. While food courts may offer an array of other beverage choices, from fruit smoothies to specialty coffees, most of these choices are high in sugar and calories. Some pack a hefty dose of fat as well. If you have a craving for a smoothie, ask about the ingredients. Some smoothies are made from an all-fruit base while others are loaded with added sugar.

Don't "window shop" in the food court.
To prevent yourself from a craving, don’t walk up and “take a look.” If you are easily tempted by the sights and smells of particular food stands, plan your route around the mall so that you can avoid these stands. Head straight for the stands that offer the best choices, and don't browse at the rest.

Dessert
As owner of Cafe Physique, I'm quite aware that I'm supposed to be "above" falling prey to the magnetism of the illustrious mall food court, but hey...I'm only human. I personally have no problem at all staying away from the various restaurants and free samples, BUT...my knees begin to jiggle and my bum begins to wiggle every single time I walk past or smell Auntie Anne's pretzels.

Cinnamon & Sugar is my favorite flavor, but I'll take 'em plain too. These hot pretzels are so delicious that they make me want to throw on a white hat and get a job behind the counter. You've never had one? Oooooo...You have no idea what you've been missing!

Your Timing Is Always Right

Appetizer
This holiday season, spend LESS time obsessing about how late you eat your last meal or snack. Many people are under the impression that eating food late at night makes you gain weight, but researchers agree that the only thing that matters is total caloric intake for the day.

This should be great news for those of you with plans for late-night parties and holiday gatherings. When you know that you will be up late and around yummy cuisine, be sure to plan ahead by cutting back on calories throughout the day. Don't skip meals - Just reduce portion sizes.

Main Course
1. Have a snack, such as fruit, an hour before the party. If you are too hungry, you will probably overeat.
2. Select vegetable and fruit salads without a lot of dressing or whipped cream
3. Take a walk instead of a second helping
4. Drink plenty of water
5. Limit or avoid high calorie beverages. Did you know one cup of eggnog has the same calories as a slice of apple pie?

Dessert
My favorite late night snack is yogurt with a handful of trail mix or a mini-bagel topped with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Both of these guiltless pleasures do just the trick for me...They satisfy my munchies, keep me from overeating more fattening snacks, and prevent me from waking up starving the next morning.

The next time you're craving something cheesy, sweet or salty, log on and check out past Café Physique postings for healthy snack and meal ideas.

Overcoming Temptation

Appetizer
Bring LESS tempting foods into your house. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if chocolate cake is your all-time favorite dessert and you have a decadent chocolate cake sitting on your kitchen counter, staring at you every evening after work, you most likely will gobble it up in record-breaking time.

Even the most dedicated and diligent person will succomb to temptation if they're hungry and the only thing available is Ben & Jerry's.

Main Course
The biggest culprit of sabotaging your healthy eating intentions is your regular trip to the grocery store because it's during this time that you decide what you will and will not bring into your home.

While grocery shopping, try to think long-term. Don't just buy what you're in the mood for at that particular moment, but try to anticipate your future cravings as well. For example, if you know that you are bound to have a sweet tooth attack some evening in the near future, go ahead and buy some Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches or some Splenda to add to your strawberries.

Take a little extra time to plan your shopping trip and make good choices while at the store. Your hips will thank you for it!

Dessert
Tempation = The desire to eat something that you know you should avoid. Hmmm...I sure do have a lot of experience in this department. As my regular readers know, there are days when I just crave something delicious and decadent, and during these times...diet, lo-cal, low-fat, low-carb, reduced-calorie, reduced-sugar stuff just won't get the job done.

In anticipation of these times, I used to stock up on yummy chocolate-based desserts at the grocery store so that I would have them available when trouble came knockin' at my tummy. However, this plan quickly backfired on me because I started nibbling on the good stuff even when I didn't have my intense cravings. In fact, by the time I really needed a hit of something remarkable, I had usually already emptied the package.

This taught me that I should not keep tempting stuff in my house. If I'm having one of those knock-down, drag out cravings, I will want it bad enough to put my shoes on, get in the car, and go get it. No need to have it sitting there, staring me down every time I enter my kitchen.

How Many Servings Are On Your Plate?

Appetizer
Eat LESS servings at each meal. Try this experiment for a week - or even just a day: Fix your plate as your normally would, but before you eat, take the time to determine how many servings of food you are taking in. You may be surprised to find out that you are ingesting 3-4x the recommended servings.

Most Americans don't know what an actual serving looks like because we're so used to receiving and eating such large portions. If you find that you're "supersizing" at every meal, you should gradually reduce your serving sizes because chances are that you will be satisfied with less food.

Main Course
There are many resources on the Internet to give you guidance on proper serving sizes, but here's a simple guide to get you started:
Chopped Vegetables: 1/2 cup

Raw Leafy Vegetables (such as lettuce): 1 cup

Fresh Fruit: 1 medium piece, 1/2 cup chopped

Dried Fruit: 1/4 cup

Pasta, Rice, Cooked Cereal: 1/2 cup

Ready-to-Eat Cereal: 1 oz. (which varies from 1/2 cup to 1 1/4 cup - check label)

Meat, Poultry, Seafood: 3 oz. (cooked); About the size of a deck of cards

Dried Beans: 1/2 cup

Nuts: 1/3 cup

Cheese: 1 1/2 oz. (2 oz. if processed cheese)

Dessert
OK, I struggle with many things on my wellness journey, but if I had to name just one thing that I struggle with more than anything else, it would be portion sizes. I swear that my stomach has got to be 10x bigger than the average woman's stomach because I can E-A-T!!! For some reason, I'm able to hold so much food in my tummy.

When I'm eating something like pizza or pancakes (2 of my favorites), I honestly have a really hard time stopping at just 1 or even 2 servings. It tastes so good, and I still have room left, so I continue to eat. If I could conquer, or even just tame, my insatiable appetite, I would be so much better off.

Follow Your Heart

Appetizer
Heart disease is the #1 killer of American adults. In an effort to combat this disease, you should buy MORE check marks. If you want to be a smart shopper, look for the heart check mark. It's your sign of heart-healthy foods.

Main Course
By issuing its heart-check mark, the American Heart Association gives consumers a tool to quickly and reliably select foods that meet nutritional criteria in two categories.

Here are 7 reasons that you should pay attention to the AHA checkmark:

It's convenient. The information you need is visible on food products at the moment you're making your purchasing decision.

It saves time. You can find the products you want more quickly. That means you have more time for more important things, like your family.

It's trustworthy. You can count on the information because it comes from America's most reliable source of heart-health information, the American Heart Association.

It identifies heart-healthy foods. You know that any product you choose that bears our Food Certification heart-check mark has passed its nutritional guidelines.

It's widespread. You can find our certified products throughout the store and throughout the nation. Many manufacturers participate, and the list of approved products keeps growing.

It's socially responsible.
No products owned by tobacco companies are admitted into the program.

It's a winner! More and more shoppers are looking for the heart-check mark when they make food purchases.

Dessert
I don’t know about you, but when I go to the grocery store, I don’t always have time to walk around searching for stuff that’s been deemed heart-healthy and pasted with a checkmark. That’s why I’ve found the Checkmark Heart website so helpful.

There’s an online listing of all of the foods that have been certified heart-healthy, and you can go through and select the ones that you’re interested in. The site will then prepare a grocery list for you that you can print out and take along. How cool is that?

Don’t Be Greasy

Appetizer
Eat LESS fried foods. If fried chicken, seafood or French fries are among your favorites, try to limit your intake and enjoy them in small amounts only on special occasions.

Main Course
Q: How can you avoid fried foods when you’re eating out?
A: Order grilled chicken sandwiches in place of fried chicken or fried fish sandwiches.

Q: How can you minimize the fat in fried foods?
A: Remove the outer coating before eating.

Dessert
I had an interesting conversation with a co-worker the other day. We were talking about not eating fried food, and I was telling her just how unhealthy fried things are. She went on to say, “Yeah, that’s true. Except for fried rice. It’s good for you because it has vegetables in it, and it’s not actually fried.”

Huh? It’s called F-R-I-E-D rice. It’s actually quite fried, and those little bits of peas and carrots are not helping at all. Although it’s cooked in a wok rather than a deep fryer, it’s made with vegetable oil or animal fat, so beware of the Friday night take-out.

The Power of One Hundred

Appetizer

Eat 100 LESS calories. Come on, you can do it! OK, here’s a little motivation. If all you did was cut 100 calories from your diet each day, you could lose up to 10 pounds in a year.

A pound of fat equals 3,500 calories. By cutting100 calories each day for 365 days, you’ll save about 36,500 calories. Divide that by 3,500, and what do you get? 10 pounds!

Here's what a pound of fat looks like...

Main Course

Here are some great tips from registered dietician Kathleen Zelman on how to cut 100 calories from your diet each day:

1) Have a piece of fresh fruit in place of cookies or chips.
2) Drink diet soda instead of regular soda.
3) Choose sherbet, sorbet, or low-fat ice cream over super-premium ice cream.
4) Use 2 tablespoons of light whipped butter or margarine instead of regular.
5) Top your favorite pasta with a red sauce instead of a cream sauce.
6) Skip the blue cheese topping on your salad.
7) Order a small drink instead of a super-sized drink.
8) Hold the bacon on your sandwich or at breakfast.
9) Use water-packed tuna instead of oil-packed.
10) Eat a snack-sized chocolate bar instead of a whole candy bar.
11) Order your pizza with veggies instead of high-fat meat toppings.
12) Eat an appetizer as your main meal instead of an entrée.
13) Skip the extra butter shot on your movie theater popcorn.
14) Order your sandwich on whole-grain bread instead of a croissant or bagel.
15) Leave the crust on the pie and enjoy the filling.
16) Leave 3 to 4 bites of food on your plate.
17) Pass on the gravy on your mashed potatoes.
18) Try an open-faced sandwich.
19) Leave the cheese off your sandwich or burger.
20) Switch to low-fat salad dressing instead of regular.
21) Use only half the packet of salad dressing when ordering salads to go.
22) Eat 2 slices of whole-grain bread instead of a bagel.
23) Spread your bread with jam instead of butter or margarine.
24) Have a side salad instead of French fries as a side dish.
25) Savor 5 Hershey kisses instead of a chocolate bar.
26) Choose skim milk instead of whole milk.
27) Eat 1/2 cup less of pasta or rice.
28) Remove the skin from poultry before eating.
29) Choose ground sirloin instead of ground beef.
30) Share a dessert.
31) Enjoy hummus with baby carrots instead of cheese and crackers for a snack.
32) Drink 1 less 12-ounce light beer or glass of wine.
33) Choose fruit canned in natural juice instead of heavy syrup.
34) Skip the butter or margarine in the pan when grilling sandwiches or eggs.
35) Eat a high-fiber, whole-grain breakfast cereal instead of granola
36) Use mustard or low-fat mayonnaise on your sandwich instead of regular mayonnaise.

Dessert

I actually think that all of these things are pretty do-able. The only one that I personally have an issue with is #16. Leaving food on my plate is SO HARD because it tastes SO GOOD, and usually I’m SO HUNGRY. Sometimes, I’m not even hungry – just downright greedy.

Don’t Count on Smoothies to Get the Job Done

Appetizer

Eat LESS smoothies. Yeah, I know that they are made with real fruit, but they’re not the same as actually eating real fruit – especially when they’re chock full of other stuff like fruit juice concentrate, whole milk dairy products, added sugar, chocolate, or peanut butter.

While dieticians agree that smoothies are still better than soda, health experts say that “the smoothie revolution has gone too far.” People are chugging these sweet & tasty drinks down as if it’s the same as eating a piece of fresh fruit.

Main Course

Here are some comparisons to further drive home today’s Appetizer:

Mr. Smoothie
Strawberry Banana = 300 calories, 58g sugar
Peanut Butter Banana = 795 calories, 41g sugar

Planet Smoothie
Spazz (strawberries, bananas, etc.) = 266 calories, 68g carbs
Chocolate Elvis (chocolate, peanut butter, bananas, etc.) = 522 calories, 109g carbs

Jamba Juice
Strawberry Whirl = 310 calories, 64g sugar
Peanut Butter Moo’d = 840 calories, 122g sugar!!!!

Now check out some examples of regular fruit:
1 med. Apple = 80 calories, 22g carbs, 16g sugar
1 med. Banana = 110 calories, 29g carbs, 21g sugar
100g Strawberries = 30 calories, 8g carbs, 5g sugar

Dessert

I think this whole smoothie thing is really interesting. All of the smoothie shops advertise how healthy they are, and there’s even a smoothie bar in my gym. That pretty much makes people feel like smoothies are “super foods” since a gym wouldn’t really endorse something that’s not absolutely great, right? I mean, you wouldn’t find a burger joint at the gym or a candy machine, so why a smoothie bar?

I guess it all goes back to moderation. Smoothies are OK for us – in moderation. We can eat all of the different flavors and enjoy them guilt-free if we eat them…What? IN MODERATION.

That’s all. (<<< style="font-size:85%;">

No More Super Sandwiches

Appetizer

Eat LESS burgers. While everyone is entitled to a burger every now and then, especially if you use lean ground turkey instead of hamburger, it's usually better to stick with a deli sandwich. If you head to McDonalds for a cheeseburger you will consume between 260 calories (plain hamburger) to 560 calories (Big Mac). At Burger King, you'll be in for something from 290 calories for a hamburger to a whopping 760 calories for a Whopper with cheese.

Now, let's switch gears. At Subway, you can get a 6" turkey sub for a mere 280 calories, or go ahead and splurge on a 6" cheese steak for just 360 calories. You'll find similar options at other sub shops like Quiznos which offers a small Turkey Lite or Honey Bourbon Chicken sub for 334 and 359 calories, respectively.

As you can see, unless you're planning to get a plain hamburger (no cheese, no fries, no pop) at a burger joint, you'll be much better off stopping at a deli for some fresh ingredients.

Main Course

While deli sandwiches are usually the smarter choice, they are not all created equal. You have to be careful not to make a Super Sandwich full of junk because you'll quickly get to the point where you might as well have had a Whopper. Here are some tips:

* Ask for a whole grain bread, pita, or wrap for extra fiber.

* Choose a lean protein source such as chicken, turkey, or lean roast beef. If tuna salad is an option, ask whether it is prepared with low-fat or fat-free mayo; if not, skip it.

* Cheese adds calcium and protein, but also saturated fat. Have just one slice. As a rule of thumb, a white cheese (like mozzarella) will be lower in calories than a yellow cheese (like cheddar).

* Load up on veggies—lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, cucumbers, etc. You’ll get a more filling sandwich without adding a lot of extra calories.

* Hold the mayo and choose mustard or vinegar instead.

* If possible, choose fruit or salad as a side instead of chips. Otherwise, choose pretzels, which are lower in fat and calories than chips.

Dessert

I like burgers - a lot. They taste good with lots of cheese and hot french fries, and I look forward to the smell of grilled burgers on a hot summer day (Hello 4th of July!). I try to act like I'm above eating at fast food restaurants because I'm known by all as a health nut, but the truth of the matter is that I really like all of those places. And when I think of fast food, I'm not thinking about a plain hamburger and small fry. Nope, not at all. I like Whoppers with cheese (hold the onion), Big Classics w/Biggie Fries, and even the soggy little fake fish squares from McDonalds. I wish I didn't like that junk, but I do.

The thing is that LIKING this stuff is not the problem. You can't really help what you like. It's eating all of it that creates the problem. So I do all that I can to avoid eating at these places at all costs because if I pull up in the drive thru, it will be very difficult...not impossible, mind you...but very hard to order a little ol' salad with 3 pieces of cold chicken instead of a burger. When I'm forced to eat at one of these places because of the company I keep or pure highway availability, I always keep in mind that my goal in life is to be fit & healthy, and the temporary satisfaction that I get from that greasy burger is going to do more harm than it's worth.

Are You Drinking Your Calories?

Appetizer

Drink LESS high-calorie beverages. Are you watching what you eat and working out, only to find that you’re not making any progress? You may be taking in hidden calories from what you’re drinking.

Many of our favorite drinks have added sugars like sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose, dextrose, corn syrups, high-fructose corn syrup, concentrated fruit juice and honey. These added sugars are the main reason why sugar now accounts for 16% of all calories consumed by Americans compared to 11% 20 years ago. Nearly a third of these added sugars come from pop, soda, Coke…depending on where you’re from (smile).

Even some drinks that are considered healthy have sugar in them naturally. 100% fruit juice does not contain the added sugars listed above, but it has fructose. Milk, for instance, has lactose. You should by no means eliminate these drinks from your diet because they provide important nutrients, but try eating fruit instead of drinking the juice so that you’ll get the benefit of the additional fiber and feel fuller longer; drink reduced-fat or fat-free milk.

Main Course

By now, most people know that pop is not healthy, and they are making what they believe to be better choices. While some are opting for diet versions of their favorite drinks, others have turned to energy drinks as a healthier alternative. These new drinks promise a slew of things, but they fail to advertise the immense amounts of sugar and caffeine included in the various energy-enhancing potions - not to mention the sodium and all of the many empty calories.

Red Bull (8.3oz)
“…Increases performance, increases concentration…stimulates metabolism.”
115 calories
214g sodium
26g sugar

Monster (8.0oz)
“…the meanest energy supplement on the planet…”
100 calories
180mg sodium
27g sugar

Rockstar (8.0oz)
“Scientifically formulated for those who lead active and exhausting lifestyles…”
110 calories
35mg sodium
27g sugar

In 1995, I read a magazine that said we can lose weight just by changing what we drink. I was intrigued by the possibilities, so when I started college I decided that I would only drink water. Admittedly, it took me several months to get used to drinking water with every meal – especially breakfast, but eventually drinking water all the time became second nature.

I’m not fanatical about my drinking habits, but drinking things other than water is just not something that I do very often. Some people say that they wouldn’t be able to do it, but I think that they could if they made the commitment to develop a long-term habit. This is not something that I did as part of a diet or a temporary fix, and 11 years later, I’m still holding on.

My motivation is this: I’m constantly hungry, so I would rather eat my calories – not drink them.

Eating Moderately Despite The Evil Cookie Master

Appetizer

Eat MORE moderately. There really is no food or drink that you can’t have at least occasionally because everything is okay, in moderation. If you’re waiting for me to give you an exact amount that you can get away with, you’ll be waiting for a long time. I’m not going to do that because you already know. How do I know this? Because we’ve all read just enough, watched just enough T.V., and have been educated just enough to know when enough is enough.

Do you want an Oreo? Go ahead and have one then. Heck, go ahead and have two of them, but please don’t eat the whole bag.

Maybe you’ve been craving pizza for two weekends in a row. Put your appetite out of its misery, and have a couple of slices on Friday night, but (a) don’t have more than that, and (b) don’t save the leftovers for Saturday.

Moderate = “Being within reasonable limits; not excessive or extreme”

Strive to live a life of moderation, and you won’t have to concern yourself with crash diets or the newest food fad because you’ll still be able to enjoy your favorites from time to time without feeling like you fell off the wagon or ruined all of your hard work.

Main Course
I’m by no means psychic, but I already know what many of you are thinking… “Amber makes this whole ‘moderation’ thing seem so easy, but she doesn’t know how hard it is for me. If I had that kind of willpower, I wouldn’t need her help.” Ahhh, but you’re so wrong! If you think back to what I told you the first time you dined with me, all of the information that I provide is for you – the every day person, not for all of the super dieters of the world or the genetically gifted. I know and understand your struggles, and we’ll work through them together – just stick with me!

If you have an addiction to certain foods, then I’m pretty sure that my whole discussion on “moderation” just doesn’t seem feasible to you. In fact, it probably sounds as though I just told you to scale a huge building in a single bound.

You may have even noticed that others can take a small pinch of the to-die-for birthday cake and be okay, while for you, a small pinch leads to the complete and total destruction of the entire upper left quadrant of the darn cake.
Moderation, you say? Humph!

If this sounds familiar, take heed of the following tips (and keep visiting Café Physique for more on the subject):

1) Eat regularly. When you're super hungry, it's very tempting to forget about good nutrition.

2) When you go out to eat, share your meal or dessert with a friend; ask for a doggie bag or a smaller portion.

3) Balance your food choices over time. Not every food has to be "perfect." When eating a food high in fat, salt or sugar, select other foods that are low in these ingredients. If you miss out on any food group one day, make up for it the next. Your food choices over several days should fit together into a healthy pattern.

4) Make concessions. Do you add a lot of butter, creamy sauces or salad dressings? Rather than eliminating these foods, put them on the side & just dip your fork into it rather than drenching your entire plate.

5) Make changes gradually. There aren’t an easy answers to a healthy diet, so don't expect to totally revamp your eating habits overnight. Begin to make small changes that can add up to positive, lifelong eating habits.

6) Buy your favorite snacks in pre-packaged portions like Kraft’s 100-calorie snack packs of Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Nabisco cracker, Ritz Chips and Wheat Thins. Otherwise, create your own snack packs (measure out single portions into plastic baggies) as soon as you come home from the store so that you never find yourself double dippin’ into a huge bag of something.

7) Get over the notion that you can’t throw things away. Yes, I know that there are people starving in other countries AND right here in the U.S. If that’s your excuse for why you have to clean your plate at each and every meal, then arrange to give your leftovers to a local homeless shelter – keeping in mind that you eating the extra food isn’t going to help prevent starvation.

Dessert
Last weekend, I had every intention of just tasting ONE of the tiny pecan puff cookies my sister’s accountant was kind enough to give her for her birthday (thanks a lot buddy!). They had been sitting on her kitchen counter, wrapped up all nicely since mid-April. Every time I went to her house, the cookies would start talking to me. This particular day the conversation went like this:

Evil Cookies: Amber, look at me! I’m wrapped up really nice in a fancy package, so you know that I came from a yummy bakery or specialty store – not just the local grocery store.

Amber: I don’t care what you look like ‘Oh Evil Ones!’

Evil Cookies: OK, but I just want to point out that each one of me is made with a delicious looking pecan – your favorite – tucked into the center, wrapped with a light “puff” of melt-in-your-mouth, indescribable cookie-type pastry.

Amber: Yeah, I know. I totally peeped that when I walked into the kitchen today.

Evil Cookies: And look how small I am. I mean, how many calories do you think I can actually contain? You can easily eat me in single bite.

Amber: That’s probably true, but I don’t need you.

Evil Cookies: You may not need me, but you certainly deserve me. After that hard-core, sweaty workout that you put in this morning, surely you can have just one? What’s the point of working out if you can’t enjoy yourself sometimes?

Amber: Uh-huh…true, true.

So, yeah I went ahead and had one. I tried to make it last, but just as the Evil Cookie Master had warned me; it melted in my mouth before I had a chance to fully absorb the essence of its goodness. So, I had another and another and another…and then I spilled the entire container all over the floor…and continued to have several more as I returned them to their proper place – while all the time reasoning that my sister is a clean person so therefore her hardwood floors are quite clean by association, despite the fact that they are trampled on by two teenage boys and their friends daily…but, I digress.

All in all, my attempt to MODERATELY taste just a single Pecan Puff (PP) led to a guilt-ridden ride home as I attempted to calculate just how many Stairmaster steps I would have to climb to work off my PP binge. I eventually came to the conclusion that, somewhere on the books (what books?), there was a law prohibiting the usage of any stair-climbing apparatus for more than 225 consecutive minutes. Cool…

Take the Guesswork out of Fast Food

Appetizer

Eat at McDonald’s® MORE often. Considering that Super Size Me is one of my favorite movies (a documentary of how a steady diet of McDonald’s food completely destroyed a man’s health), I never thought I would say that, but there’s a first time for everything. Participating locations of the Golden Arches are running a promotion – Buy any Premium Salad (Chicken Caesar, Bacon Ranch, Fruit & Walnut, or Asian Salad) and a bottled water, and receive a Yourself®!Fitness DVD with a 15 minute Yoga, Cardio, Core, or Strength workout. Ronald is finally catching on!

In an effort to combat all of the negative press that fast-food joints have received lately due to their contribution to America’s obesity epidemic, many of them are trying to lessen the blow and help us out by providing nutritional information online. While this still doesn’t excuse them from offering and advertising a constant flow of addictive, artery-clogging junk, it’s at least a step in the right direction. Here’s info on a few of the best ones:

McDonald’s (Bag a McMeal)®: Allows you to actually create your own meal by selecting from their entire menu, and then it spits out the nutrition facts for your choices. This is especially helpful in helping you figure out the worst culprits and putting together a sensible choice when fast-food is the only thing you have time to grab.

Arby’s® Nutrition Calculator: Not quite as user-friendly as Mickey D’s, but it’s just as effective. Wow! Some of the information provided on this site really shocked me. I mistakenly thought that Arby’s was one of the healthiest fast-food restaurants, but boy was I wrong. The meal that I picked at Arby’s actually had more calories from fat and saturated fat than the one I picked at McDonald’s. That’s scary!

Taco Bell ® Nutrition Calculator: Hmmmm…very interesting. This is not a place I would have chosen to eat, but I was able to find some things that I wouldn’t be ashamed to eat that taste yummy too. It works much like Arby’s program, and it too allows you to select certain items for your “tray” before it calculates.

Subway ® Nutrition Information: They do provide nutrition info for all menu items, but this was by far the worst site because it’s just a list – not interactive at all. So, in order to see what my nutrition info would be for a 6-inch turkey sub AND chips AND a drink, I would have to write down (or print) the info from the sandwich page and then from the chips page, etc.

Dessert

I have a crazy obsession with Hollywood gossip. I know that it's shallow, stupid, meaningless, blah, blah, blah, but there is absolutely nothing that can beat an evening at home on the couch with some hot tea and a stack of People, Us Weekly, Star, etc. Let's just call it a fat-free, lo-cal, no guilt pleasure! The problem is that after looking at pictures of these ultra skinny gals day in and day out, I’ve started to get a little mentally warped, and I spent today snapping myself back into reality.

Last year, Oprah interviewed Renee Zellweger after she lost all of the weight she put on for Bridget Jones Diary II, and one of them said something like, “Regular people think we’re so lucky because we (famous people) have personal chefs to cook us healthy meals and personal trainers to keep us fit, but we still have to eat the right foods, and we still have to get up and answer the door when the trainer comes over.” All I have to say to that is “WHATEVER, Girlfriend!”

Let me tell you this…If I had a live-in cook to fix yummy, healthy foods that I like for breakfast, lunch & dinner PLUS a top-notch trainer who showed up at my house to work me out in my state-of-the-art home gym every morning, I would be a Diva-in-Training…for real.

But until then, I’ll just stick with my local gym dues, my frozen dinners, and my non-Oscar-worthy physique…and love it!
